Why Should I Install an EV Charger at Home?
There are a number of reasons why you might want to consider installing a home EV charger. Whether you have a hybrid or fully electric vehicle, a home EV charger is the most convenient and cost-effective way to keep your vehicle charged and ready to go.
Some of the benefits of installing an EV charger at home include:
- Convenience: When you have an EV charger at home, you don’t have to worry about finding a public charging station or waiting for your car to charge while you’re out and about. With a home EV charger, you can simply plug in your vehicle whenever you get home, and it will be ready to go in the morning.
- Speed: When you use a standard 120-volt outlet to charge your electric vehicle, it can take anywhere from 8 to 24 hours to fully charge your battery, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. With a home EV charger, you can charge your car much faster. Most home EV chargers use a 240-volt outlet (similar to the outlet you use to power your dryer), allowing you to charge your vehicle in about half the time.
- Cost savings: In addition to being more convenient, charging your electric vehicle at home is also more cost-effective. On average, it costs about half as much to charge your vehicle at home as it does to charge it at a public charging station. And if you have solar panels on your home, you can charge your vehicle for free, using the power of the sun!
How to Choose the Right Home EV Charger
When it comes to selecting the right home EV charger for your needs, there are a few things you should consider. First, you’ll want to make sure that the charger you choose is compatible with your vehicle. Most electric vehicles sold in the US today use the same standard charging connector, known as a J1772 connector. However, some vehicles, such as Teslas, use a different type of connector, known as a Tesla connector. If you have a Tesla, you’ll need to purchase a charger specifically designed for Teslas, or an adapter that allows you to use a standard J1772 charger.
In addition to compatibility, you’ll also want to consider charging speed. Most home EV chargers use a 240-volt outlet, which allows you to charge your vehicle faster than you can with a standard 120-volt outlet. However, some chargers are faster than others. The charging speed of an EV charger is measured in kilowatts (kW). A 240-volt outlet can deliver a maximum of about 7.2 kW. However, many chargers are slower, delivering only 3.6 or 4.8 kW. If you want to be able to charge your vehicle quickly, you’ll want to choose a charger that delivers at least 7.2 kW.
In addition to charging speed, you’ll also want to consider charging level. There are three levels of charging: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. Level 1 charging is the slowest, and it can take up to 24 hours to fully charge your vehicle. Level 2 charging is faster, and it can fully charge your vehicle in about 4 to 8 hours. Level 3 charging is the fastest, and it can fully charge your vehicle in about 30 minutes. However, Level 3 charging requires a special charger, known as a DC fast charger, and it’s not typically used for home charging. Most home EV chargers are Level 2 chargers.
